IDENTITY

The Wine Refuge: emotional tasting room

The building

The Wine Refuge is a 170-square-meter building built next to the winery’s historic winery.

An ambitious project: union of wine, mountain culture and architecture. The project, by architect Domenico Mazza of Courmayeur, received a special mention in the international competition ” The Cathedrals of Wine” by Il Gambero Rosso magazine, a side event of the Venice biennale.

The impact is striking, with a roof that is reminiscent in shape of mountains and with a structure in which glass windows dominate. As you enter, you will have a sensory experience, with an area dedicated to essences and a library with books about the Aosta Valley and wine, all in a place where you can sit, read, have a drink, and observe the view.

The choice of architecture and the name “Refuge” has a double meaning: a reminder of the mountains, thus constituting an alpine refuge with typical high mountain architecture.

And then also the concept of a refuge understood as a welcome.

The architectural style

The architect created a building with a contemporary appearance, which was the result of the transformation of an earlier extension project that had already been initiated by the property and then revised. Architect Mazza therefore had to think of the building starting from some existing reinforced concrete structures that strongly influenced its layout. The cellar appears as a large canopy made of laminated wood, covered in sheet metal and with the vertical infills almost exclusively glazed.

The complex profile of the building-which from a distance is almost reminiscent of that of a mountainous massif-comes from the interpenetration of several simple volumes inclined toward each other. When evening falls, the skillful use of transparencies and lighting only adds to the deconstructivist character of this work.

Under this large covered courtyard are the different rooms of production, sales, and even loisir held together by an interesting tour route.
